Wall Street Journal - Justin Lahart - 5 days ago

By JUSTIN LAHART
The U.S. economy gathered steam heading into the end of the year, with
consumers lifting spending as businesses have become more willing to
hire.

Consumer spending rose 0.4% in November from October, adjusting for
inflation, the Commerce Department said Thursday. Separate reports
showed job-market improvement, a pickup in business orders for new
equipment and improved consumer sentiment...

Nutty Left-Loons Believe That The Recession Is Over!
The biggest current US problem is unemployment. According to Bureau of
Labor statistics, official rate reached 9.8%. In summer this year it
was 9.5%, in August, September, October - 9.6%, and now - 9.8. Half-
year trend is pointing up.
The Gallup measure is more precise, and the chart show very clear that
situation on the job market is not changing. The survey based on real
data taken by phone from working adults. The questions are if their
company is hiring new people, keeping workforce the same, or having
layoffs.
Gallup finds that broader U.S. underemployment worsened to 18.5% in
mid-December. It went up sharply from 17.2% at the end of November
(see the chart).
‘Further, the end of Christmas hiring and the normally slow winter job
market will continue to affect jobs in early 2011’, says Gallup.
Hit by a negative jobs market, the Consumer Confidence Index posts a
decline down nearly two points to 52.5 from 54.3 in November.
The US consumer confidence survey measures the level of optimism that
consumers have about the current performance of the economy, and
regarding its 6 months outlook. These passed 3 years, 2008-2010,
consumer confidence index fall enormously. For example, in previous
recession, between 2000 and 2002, the lowest level was 77.0points (in
September of 2003); average for those years was over 90.
